Photo-Opp History Lesson: The Old City Jail

If you’ve spent some time on Anna Maria Island, specifically on bustling Pine Avenue, then you’ve surely seen The Old City Jail. Hopefully, you’ve even snapped a picture in it.

This landmark is conveniently located adjacent to The Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum. The museum itself is an island treasure with plenty of items to take you back in time but arguably its most famous (and most photographed) feature is The Old City Jail. The concrete building with no windows, no roof, and no doors is a popular photo opportunity and a must-see stop for any island visitor.

Spilling The Beans on Anna Maria Island’s Best Coffee

One of the best things about Anna Maria Island is that no matter how popular it may get in the season, it always seems to maintain that friendly small-town feel. We believe a large part has to do with the lack of name-brand chain restaurants and the city’s commitment to supporting small business.

For tourists that means a couple of things: venturing outside your national go-to’s and no Starbucks. This opens up a world of opportunity in trying some of our great small businesses! Throughout the coming weeks we’ll be highlighting a guide for some of the best local restaurants and hot spots.

Bringing Fall when it Feels like Summer

Living in or vacationing to paradise is a dream. On Anna Maria Island, we get year-round beach weather and most days feel like Summer. With most of our residents or visitors having moved from colder weather or visiting to seek refuge from the snowy season, we relish in our eternal Summer. While the rest of the country greets the Autumnal Equinox by digging their sweaters out of the back of their closets, going apple picking, and welcoming a crispness in the air.

The only colors that change are our sunsets, the only shoveling we do is for a sandcastle, and the closest thing we have to leaves falling is an occasional fallen palm-frond from a large gust of wind.

So, how do we celebrate Fall when it always feels like Summer? Here are 10 simple ways to add some Autumnal flair to our island lifestyle.

Anna Maria Island Christmas Parade

One of our biggest and most popular holiday traditions is the Anna Maria Island Christmas Parade. There is something so unique about this parade. If these don’t peak your interest, then it must be all the local businesses, residents and visitors (yes, visitors) participating in the long line of vehicles, floats and boats parading from one of the island to the other end.
